Located at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range, Lodi is approximately 100 miles east of San Francisco and 35 miles south of Sacramento. A major winegrowing region since the 1850's, Lodi is home to over 100,000 acres of premium vineyards farmed by more than 750 growers.

With more than 100 varieties currently being cultivated, Lodi offers a diverse portfolio of wines. While long renowned for its high-quality Zinfandel production, including an estimated 2,000 acres of pre-Prohibition own rooted vines, the area also produces some of the most versatile, food friendly varieties in the world, including mouthwatering Picpoul and Kerner, juicy Carignane and delicate old vine Cinsault, complex Iberian, Italian and Alsatian styles and beyond, many of which pair perfectly with the often tricky cornucopia of flavors at the Thanksgiving table.

The region owes much of its recent success to the increase in critical and consumer attention paid to Lodi-designate wines. In fact, the past 10-15 years has seen astronomical growth in demand for Lodi wines, as well as in tourism to the wine region. Today, Lodi is home to over 85 boutique wineries specializing in small-lot, handmade wines that have garnered major awards at domestic and international wine competitions. In addition, Lodi is one of the leading wine regions when it comes to sustainable viticulture. The Lodi Winegrape Commission created Lodi Rules™, California's first third-party-certified sustainable winegrowing program, which recently won Governor Jerry Brown's annual Governor's Environmental and Economic Leadership Award (GEELA) - the highest environmental award in the state of California - for its mission to address major environmental, economic and social challenges facing California agricultural industry.

Growing
The vineyards for the Mettler Petite Sirah are sustainably grown. The crop level was controlled using various viticulture techniques and was farmed with the latest biologically integrated farming system practices. This includes a reduction of synthetic chemicals and fertilizers in the vineyard; controlled deficit irrigation; and cover crops, which increase the rate of organic matter turnover, thus maintining the structure and fertility of the soil.

The Mettler Petite Sirah exudes richness and complexity from the first sip. True to its varietal heritage, the color is dark and inky, and the aromas are a pleasing blend of raspberry, plum and vanilla with traces of mineral. About m2 Wines
m2 creates dynamic, artisanal wines from distinctive vineyards in Lodi, Napa, and the Sierra Foothills. Our first wines were vinted in 2004, and two years later, in the fall of 2006, we opened our original winery and and tasting room in an industrial park in northeast Lodi. Think “industrial shabby.” We quickly outgrew that space, but it took us a few years to build a new winery. (Great wineries, like great wines, just don’t happen overnight.) Our new “industrial chic” winery and tasting room on Peltier Road opened in January, 2014.

About Alicante Bouschet
Alicante Bouschet is a winegrape that has been widely cultivated since 1866 in France and California. It was planted heavily during Prohibition for export to East Coast winemakers, but fell out of favor after ratification of the 21st Amendment and is now relatively rare.

Appellation: Lodi
Vineyard: St. Jenise
Alcohol: 13.7%
Retail Price: $26.00

Food Pairing: Marinated & Smoked Paprika Grilled Pork Tenderloin With Pancetta Roasted Tomato And Red Pepper Fennel Ragu

ACQUIESCE WINERY & VINEYARDS 2014 VIOGNIER (SRP $23.00) WITH ROASTED BUTTERNUT SQUASH BISQUE

Growing
Harvested in the Mokelumne River AVA of the Lodi Appellation, our grape clones are Tablas Creek cuttings from the famous French Château de Beaucastel Winery in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape region. Our climate is very similar to that of the Southern Rhône with cool nighttime breezes from the Mokelumne River nearby giving our grapes their ripe, fruity flavors with excellent balance.

Winemaking
All of our grapes are hand-picked and immediately pressed as whole clusters to capture their fresh, flavorful character. The grapes were harvested in the early morning to keep acidity at its highest, providing the vibrancy in the wine. The juice is then cool fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks to highlight the pure fruit expressions.
